The Teacher

Liz Bernstein is the founder of Soulful Elephant Yoga LLC, and a devoted student of the 8 limbs of yoga. Since 2005, the most important thing yoga has taught her is how to cultivate compassion for herself and others. Over the past 12 years she has studied numerous styles of Asana (posture), Pranayama (breath control) and Dhyana (Meditation), something that has helped her change the way she approaches all aspects of life. She has been studying different types of meditation since 2009 and has found her home in Buddhist meditation.  Most prominently, Metta, or Loving-Kindness meditation which directs positive wishes towards all beings everywhere.  She is working towards her 300 hour advanced Yoga certification and will complete it by November 2018!

In 2009, she discovered her Pilates practice and found how it complimented yoga, so since 2014 she has been teaching Pilates in addition to yoga. Liz is currently working on her comprehensive Pilates reformer certification.

In addition to being a Yoga and Pilates instructor, she is an economist (graduated from Boston University in 2007 with a Master’s in Economics, she enjoys cooking, traveling and hiking. She is based in D.C., USA where she is also an active volunteer in the community, devoting a large portion of her time to N Street Village, a women’s homeless shelter and empowerment community in the heart of D.C.

Her Yoga style

Liz draws on three main styles of yoga in her Vinyasa classes, Ashtanga, Prana Flow and Iyengar for alignment. Expect a dynamic Vinyasa based class with a focus on breath, bandhas and mindfulness. She loves music and a great playlist to accompany the sound track of our breath.

What’s included :

o 3 Classes a day, taught by yours truly, all classes are suitable for all levels , including beginners

o Meditation – in the morning or at sunset daily

o Yoga – Classes will cover a range of topics and peak poses to deepen your practice and calm your mind. At least one evening restorative class will be given.

o Pilates Mat – I believe everywhere you are mobile you should be stable and strong. You will have opportunities to design each class by picking body parts to focus on throughout the week.

o All props for practice will be provided by Kathy’s Island Retreat, but you are welcome to bring anything you desire.

o All classes are optional. The only thing that’s not is breathing

o 3 Beautiful, farm to table meals a day

o All allergies can be accounted for, no problem

o Vegetarian meals (some vegan alternatives can be offered upon request)

o No red meat or pork at Retreat

o Departure day, Saturday the 9th , an easy breakfast will be included

o Transports to and from the Karpathos airport as well as for all excursions (2 excursions)

o 1 Village excursion to the ancient and famous mountain village Olympos, with dinner at a local village restaurant.

o 1 beach excursion to see the other side of the island, exactly which beach is TBD.

What’s NOT Included :

Drinks

o Coffee and Tea are included in breakfast and we will stop for water at a supermarket on the way from the airport to the retreat center. It is advised to only drink bottled water in Greece.

Travel:

Traveling from America, I recommend booking your international flight to Greece and your domestic flight to Karpathos separately. There are several direct flights to Karpathos from both Athens and Rhodes, on a daily basis throughout the summer. Both Olympic Air and SkyExpress flight direct.
